The beauty of Invisalign is the fact that they are practically invisible and meant to be minimally disruptive in your life. This means you can wear them while you travel and no one will be any the wiser. However, there are a few things you need to keep in mind when travelling with Invisalign so that your treatment goes smoothly.
Travelling with Invisalign is certainly still possible, you just need to plan ahead to make sure you have everything you need. You also need to take precautions to make sure a mishap while you are travelling doesn’t derail your treatment plan. Here are our top tips for travelling with Invisalign.
Plan your meals carefully
Eating is one of the biggest joys of travelling, but you might need to plan your meals a little more carefully. Instead of grazing throughout the day, try to stick to designated meal times, and avoid snacks between meals.
Since you have to remove your aligners every time you eat or drink, you can minimise the fuss by sticking to three meals a day. You’ll need to rinse your mouth and aligners before you replace the, so try to choose restaurants and cafes with good bathroom facilities. It’s also a good idea to carry bottled water with you if you are unsure about rinsing your aligners in the tap water.
Make an Invisalign survival pack
Make sure you have all the right materials with you. This includes your Invisalign aligners, as well as any other materials from your orthodontist, such as a retainer case or cleaning tablets. You don’t want to be caught in a situation where you can’t properly clean your aligners as this could mean you are unable to wear them. An Invisalign survival pack could include:
- Travel-sized toothpaste
- Toothbrush
- Invisalign storage case
- Cleaning tablets
- Retainer case
- Mouthwash
- Invisalign Chewies
- Dental floss
Keep everything in a small cosmetic bag and take it with you while you are out and about.
Keep a storage case with you at all times
Whenever you take your aligners out, it’s important that you put them in a safe place. Losing an aligner while you are travelling could derail your treatment, and you’re much less likely to be reunited with a lost aligner if you are travelling. Carry a storage case with you so you can take your aligners out at mealtimes without worrying about where you put them.
Take the next and previous aligner in your case
Whenever you travel, make sure you take the next and previous set of aligners in your case with you. This way, if you do lose or damage an aligner while you are travelling, you can continue treatment without having to wait for a replacement.
If you lose an aligner while travelling, get in touch with your dentist to find out if you should go back to wearing your previous aligner and wait for a replacement, or if you can move forward to the next aligner in your case.
Have a plan for dealing with an emergency
Even with the best preparation, accidents can happen. If you lose or damage an aligner while travelling, it’s important to have a plan for what to do next. First, try and locate the missing aligner. This is much easier if you are staying in one place as you can check all the places where you have been. If you’ve moved on from your destination, you’ll need to decide whether to wear the previous aligner or move on to the next aligner.
